Starmount High School is one of two high schools in the Yadkin County School District. The majority of the 144,702-square-foot campus was constructed in 1967. The district is in its fifth year of its energy management program, which works to raise awareness about energy efficiency and encourage behavioral changes to help save energy and resources. The district's energy management team also regularly audits the schools to make sure all heating and cooling equipment is operating efficiently and on the correct schedules.

The energy management team has made improvements such as installing programmable thermostats and LED exit lighting, and upgrading to T-8 lamps. Starmount High School received a score of 83 to earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance the first time it measured its energy use in Portfolio Manager.
