Developed, owned, and managed by Hines, Wells Fargo Center is a 57-story, 1.2 million-square-foot office tower standing on the site of the old Northwestern National Bank building (which was destroyed by fire in 1982). The building's design, by Cesar Pelli & Associates, evokes the elegance of the great Art Deco skyscrapers of the early 20^th century. Wells Fargo Center amenities include a ground-level pedestrian promenade occupying a full block, with a 100-foot-high domed skylit rotunda on one side and a 33-foot-high formal lobby on the other. In 1989, Wells Fargo Center received both the prestigious Urban Land Institute Award and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) Award, and in 1994 received the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) award. Wells Fargo Center was completed in 1987.

Wells Fargo Center earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance through the retrofitting of building lighting to high-efficiency T8 bulbs with electronic ballasts and through the installation of variable frequency drives (VFDs) on Wells Fargo Center's air handling units, which allowed them to run at levels corresponding closely to the level of demand. The lighting retrofit alone saves an estimated two million kilowatt hours annually.
