building

The Wilmington Campus was built in 1960 and now houses the Cab Calloway School of the Arts, The Charter School of Wilmington, and James H. Groves High School.  These schools offer a comprehensive and challenging education for their respective students.  The Red Clay Consolidated School District completed extensive assessments to determine the needs of the campus to ensure that the facility continues to meet the needs of its varied programs.

An investment of 23.5 million dollars was required to complete all of the recommended renovations and additions to the Wilmington Campus.  The recommended renovations and additions took place in six major categories:  1) replacement of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment and accessories; 2) renovations and upgrades to the classrooms, library, and science labs, and upgrades to the facility for ADA code compliance; 3) an electrical systems upgrade to support the new systems; 4) an upgrade of athletic facility bleachers; 5) installation of a sprinkler system; and 6) replacement of all original plumbing fixtures.

ENERGY STAR Guidelines for Energy Management were followed throughout the design and procurement phases for these major capital projects.  Data compiled through Portfolio Manager help school officials ensure that these improvements maximize the use of their energy resources.

Communications:

  • Share the "Statement of Energy Performance: Facility Summary" from ENERGY STAR's Portfolio Manager with the school community.

  • Publish articles in the local media and school newsletter, and post information on the school's Web site.

  • Provide resources and data to teachers and students for use with class projects.

  • Present at faculty, parent, and school board meetings.
  • Testimonial:

"We are proud to be one of the schools earning the ENERGY STAR.  During the last 3 years, our school community has worked hard to conserve energy wherever we could do so.  It is as simple as turning off the lights every time one leaves a classroom or office, shutting down all electrical equipment before leaving for the day, keeping classroom doors closed when using heat or air conditioning, and using sunlight in lieu of classroom lights when feasible.  Our students and faculty have increased their level of awareness toward helping to preserve our environment.  This is a grass roots effort school-wide that started with energy conservation, and is now moving to a building-wide recycling effort, a goal we are embarking on as a school-wide community this fall."
    -- Julie Rumschlag, Dean/Principal, Cab Calloway/Wilmington Campus
