building

Carlock Elementary School is a 14,500-square-foot building serving students in grades K-5. Opened in 1938 with three additions since, the site currently educates approximately 140 regular education students. Since August 2008, this school has utilized a ground source (geothermal) system, which replaced an aging steam boiler with no air conditioning. The unique one-pipe design has provided energy efficiency far greater than the former boiler system. The comfort for students and staff has resulted in a much better learning environment.

In 2004, the Board of Education signed a contract with Energy Education, Inc. to help with a dwindling Operations and Maintenance Fund budget by managing utilities and containing costs. The formal application of the program began August 1, 2005. Thus, August 1, 2004 through July 31, 2005 became the base year for building performance comparison. Using the methods developed by Energy Education, Inc., which include having an Energy Educator Manager work in the district and expert consultants frequently visit to assist with both building and data analysis, the school district began seeing savings. As a people-based program, the major goal was to get each employee and student to think about energy savings.

Employees at this site clearly embraced the energy savings concepts advocated by Energy Education, Inc. and ENERGY STAR. Steps were taken to minimize energy needs at all times but in particular evenings, weekends, and holidays. Accordingly, annual energy savings have risen to over $45,000. The cooperation of custodial, teaching, cooking, and administrative staff have each contributed to the success with energy savings at this school. This building has scored an 82 on EPA's Energy Performance Scale.

Testimonial:

"In 2008, this school changed from steam boiler heating to a geothermal system that included air conditioning. With that and the diligence of the staff to save energy, this building has seen great strides in energy reduction while demonstrating greater comfort and improved student learning."
