Canon City Schools has been involved in energy efficiency projects for many years, and has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 2008. Recently, the school district was recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving the district's overall energy performance by more than 10 percent. The district's energy reduction rate is now at 19.3 percent. The Canon City School District includes nine schools as well as three auxiliary buildings, encompassing a total of 650,000 square feet. These buildings range in age from 1925 to 2006 (built year). Some of the energy efficiency projects the school district has undertaken include extensive preventative maintenance, use of geothermal energy for heating and cooling, thermal storage, lighting retrofits, and new insulation to improve building envelopes. As an active ENERGY STAR partner, the district has been engaged in benchmarking, tracking energy consumption, and understanding energy use within each building. Canon City Schools has reached an average ENERGY STAR rating of 90 for the 10 buildings within its portfolio, earning the district recognition as a Top Performer, and four of the nine schools earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2009. The Canon City School District is the first school district in Colorado to receive this prestigious level of recognition from EPA and ENERGY STAR.

In 2003, the district began installing a new direct digital control (DDC) energy management system (EMS), which was completed for the entire building in 2006, and then installed new high efficiently boilers in 2004. The lighting retrofit in 1998 included de-lamping, adding HID lights in the gyms, and using compact florescent bulbs (CFLs) or T-8 lamps and electronic ballasts. In 2006, the district installed a thermal storage system for cooling and continued the geothermal pilot project begun in 2001. This school has earned the ENERGY STAR in 2009 and 2010. Starting in 2009, two 100kW solar photovoltaic (PV) systems were installed at the school (operational in 2010); as of the end of 2010, the system had generated 279,529 kWh, with a carbon dioxide emissions offset of 349,411 lbs or 174 tons.
