Constructed in 2003, James Dougherty Elementary school was the first campus constructed in Eastern Dublin. With a modern campus comes state-of-the-art learning technology--a boon for students and teachers, at a cost of increased energy consumption.
In 2008, Dublin Unified School District began a comprensive energy education and management program to improve energy efficiency in partnership with Energy Education, Incorporated (EEI). This was a people-based program designed educate staff to better utilize the resources already in place within the district.
The energy program instituted several strategies to keep energy consumption under control:
-- Staff training
-- Custodial team cleaning implementation
-- Comprehensive energy audits during all periods of the day
-- Smart energy management system (EMS) scheduling, and incorporation of best building automation practices
-- Purchase and installation of 7-day light timers throughout the campus
-- In portables and classrooms, installation of HVAC twist timers
-- Occupancy sensor installation throughout the campus
-- Removal of redundant night lighting in administration building
-- Better use of existing building automation (for example, the holiday function in lighting controllers)
-- Use of natural light in library and multipurpose room
Communications:
Communications included a press release to the community announcing the energy program, and presentations made to the Dublin Unified School District Board of Trustees (twice per year).
Testimonial:
"We at Dublin Unified School District are proud of our energy program! Since early 2008, James Dougherty Elementary has achieved almost $40,000 in cost savings as the result of implementing energy saving measures.
The Dublin community charges us with the responsiblity of teaching the city's children. That is an awesome obligation, as is our responsibility to be good stewards of public resources. Our energy program does not detract from the learning environment; rather, our energy program protects learning programs and demonstrates Dublin Unified's committment to green practicies."
