The Four Seasons Produce facility, located in Ephrata, PA, is a 240,600-square-foot refrigerated distribution center with an attached corporate office. Four Seasons Produce is a progressive, full-line produce company and one of the largest independent produce wholesalers in the country. The company provides supply chain solutions, including full-service logistics, sourcing, and transportation, to customers in the produce industry.

The company earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2008, after beginning to benchmark its energy data in EPA's Portfolio Manager tool only 2 years earlier.  Four Seasons Produce has improved its energy performance by working to continuously improve the use of energy and resources across the entire organization. The company reduced this facility's electric bill by more than 24 percent in 2008 alone and continues to look for additional ways to reduce its energy footprint. Four Seasons Produce has achieved these results through multiple projects including:
-- Installing energy management software in the refrigeration system to control peak demand, reducing electric use by more than 50,000 kWh per month.
--
Partnering with a curtailment service provider to actively participate in demand response programs through the PJM Interconnection. This partnership also provides the company with real-time energy reporting, analytics, and forecasting software.
--
Completing a lighting retrofit in the warehouse and production areas of the distribution facility to change 400 metal-halide lamps to 6-lamp fluorescent fixtures. This improvement reduced annual lighting electrical demand more than 600,000 kWh and produced a significant decrease in the refrigeration load.
--
Installing a system to improve electric power quality. This system reduces electrical equipment maintenance and eliminates voltage surges by providing voltage stability and improvement, current balancing and reduction, power factor correction, and increased kVA capacity.

Communications:

To increase awareness among its associates, Four Seasons Produce promotes energy and sustainability each month by producing an article for its in-house weekly newsletter. One section of its Web site also promotes company initiatives. On an annual basis, the Facilities Manager holds an Energy and Sustainability Summit for key managers to share results of past projects and communicate on developing initiatives. In 2008, Four Seasons Produce started a G.R.E.E.N! Team (Gaining Resource Energy & Efficiency Now!). The mission of the G.RE.E.N! Team is:

"Implementing innovative yet proven cost-saving methods to reduce energy use, conserve resources, and improve the environment."

Testimonial:

"The Four Seasons family of companies is committed to conserving resources and achieving sustainability. We continually strive to find new ways to reduce energy use. Through daily, weekly, and monthly monitoring, reporting, and comparisons to historical energy data, we strive to ensure that the Wabash Road facility operates at high efficiency and is eligible to earn the ENERGY STAR each and every year going forward."
