building

More than 50 years old, the Lamplighter School has earned the ENERGY STAR for 6 consecutive years, the only school in the country with this distinction. With the help of 4-L Engineering and T.E.A.M. Solutions, it achieved this remarkable success through a robust energy management program coupled with the participation of students, staff, and administration.

Located in Dallas, TX, Lamplighter School serves pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. The indoor facility consists of 30 classrooms, a fine arts wing, a media center, an auditorium, and a health and fitness facility. The extensive outdoor environment includes a unique playground with playhouses and a tunnel; a barn complete with chickens, a cow, and a pig; flower, butterfly, herb, and vegetable gardens; and an adjoining creek area. Designed by renowned architect O'Neil Ford, with additional facilities designed by Frank Welch and Associates, the building became a showcase for the innovative Lamplighter school program, which strives for sharing and cooperative learning.

In keeping with its unique building, Lamplighter is continually looking for ways to improve its energy efficiency. The indoor facility is designed to maximize daylighting through the use of extensive glass, skylights, and classrooms without doors. A facilities management system was installed in 1985, but by 2000, it became clear that this system needed to be upgraded. Using EPA's Portfolio Manager tool, 4-L Engineering rated the energy efficiency of the school and determined its energy performance was well below average.  In 2003, 4-L Engineering and T.E.A.M. Solutions made extensive renovations to the HVAC system. The equipment is still 1968 vintage and utilizes double duct design with chillers and an ice bank for cooling and boilers for heating. The methodology and sequencing was very innovative. The software for the system makes it possible to view, control the system, alert, alarm, and train via the Internet. Daily energy consumption is monitored using an energy load analyzer program.

Through the renovations to the system, Lamplighter has reduced its energy use by 47 percent, resulting in significant cost avoidances.
