St. Vrain Valley Schools partnered with PCD Engineering Services, Inc., an ENERGY STAR Partner, to provide the indoor environment assessment of Longmont High School. PCD Engineering Services is a firm focused on the client and the environment, providing sustainable design engineering, energy management services and integrated building solutions.
Longmont High School is one of four senior high schools in the 38 school district. The school was built in 1962 and several additions have subsequently been completed. The campus includes two 1,440 square foot portable classroom buildings.
Energy conservation projects, facility improvement projects and an effective energy management program are responsible for Longmont High earning the ENERGY STAR.
A large-scale, bond-funded project began in 1997 and included replacement of mechanical and plumbing systems, electrical service upgrades, several remodels and many ADA enhancements at Longmont High. Notable systems include HVAC units with 100% outdoor air systems for free cooling during mild outdoor weather conditions and higher efficiency forced-draft boilers. A rotary screw liquid chiller and induced-draft cooling tower were also installed to allow the building to be cooled year round.
A $3.25 million energy performance contract (ESPC) was completed in 1998. It reduced energy costs by an estimated 25% across the district. Longmont High received lighting upgrades and a new direct digital control (DDC) system as part of the ESPC. The old, inefficient, T-12 lighting system in the gym was replaced with new, pulse-start metal halide fixtures, offering fast start/restart times and energy savings. The T-12 lighting system throughout the remainder of the school was upgraded with T-8 lighting and electronic ballasts. The lighting retrofit also replaced all incandescent bulbs with fluorescent lamps and installed high-efficiency LED exit signs. The DDC system provides state-of-the-art HVAC control, systems monitoring, and equipment scheduling of the mechanical systems.
An effective energy management program was established in 1993 to save money and teach the benefits of energy and resource conservation. The energy management program's efforts cut energy costs by 20% and save the district $500,000 per year (compared to the 1992-1993 levels, based on a per-square-foot basis and including gas, electricity and water costs.) A recycling program has also been implemented at Longmont High and throughout the district.
"PCD Engineering Services commends the St. Vrain School District on its strong commitment to energy efficiency and to our children. Being a taxpayer in the St. Vrain District, I am especially thrilled with their investment in energy efficiency and stewardship of taxpayer dollars. The energy efficiency and facility improvement projects implemented at Longmont High pay energy-savings dividends, reduce pollution to our atmosphere and result in an improved learning environment. Longmont High represents a textbook example of how to improve the energy and environmental performance of an existing school. This school is a deserving recipient of the ENERGY STAR award."
