Grissom Middle School serves approximately 650 middle school students in the southern portion of the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation located in Mishawaka, Indiana. The more than 157,400-square-foot building was built in 1968 and remodeled in 2000.
In 2007, the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation partnered with Energy Education Inc. to create a people-based energy conservation program that emphasizes changing the habits of building occupants. From the efforts of the more than 50 teachers and staff members at Grissom, the energy savings have gone from 9 percent in the first year of the program to 31 percent in 2011. Since then, the building has received ENERGY STAR certification for two years in a row.
In addition to changing the how the equipment is used, there have been a number of equipment improvements over the past few years. More than 250 computers have been upgraded to have more energy-efficient power supplies and flat-screen monitors. The most significant work was done on the Energy Management System (EMS), which was upgraded to a Web-based platform to simplify the process of monitoring and managing equipment. Now, the facility’s equipment is working more much more efficiently.
