Martinsville High School is the only public high school in the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville. It encompasses grades 9-12 and runs a trimester schedule. The average enrollment is 1,700 students with 100 certified staff.  Martinsville, Indiana is an urban fringe community located in Morgan County, IN.

Foreseeing the need to reduce energy costs, the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville began implementing energy management in 1989. Computer controls were installed to schedule the operation of heating and air conditioning units and maintain set temperatures at the High School, Central Elementary, and West Middle schools. Today, the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in nine schools are controlled by computers at the Maintenance Department.

In 1996, the school district completed a lighting retrofit in all of its schools and buildings, changing T12 fluorescent lights to T8 lights; incandescent to halogen capsylites and compact fluorescents; exit lights to LEDs; and all ballasts to energy savers.

An energy policy and plan was introduced at the start of the 2007-08 school year, which included simple guidelines such as turning off unneeded lighting, removing non-essential electrical appliances from classrooms, and shutting off or unplugging all items not in use.

The High School joins seven other schools to earn the ENERGY STAR label for superior energy performance in 2010.  All seven were labeled in 2009 and three earned this prestigious recognition in 2008.
