Pearl S. Buck Elementary is a two-story, 63,550-square-foot building located on a 15-acre site. The original building has had no additions since it was constructed in 1969.
Projects to improve energy efficiency took place over a period of several years as lighting systems were completely replaced with T-8 and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). Exit signs were also retrofitted with energy-efficient LEDs. Boilers and efficient pumps replaced the original equipment, which was converted from steam to hydronic. The absorption/steam air conditioning system, which required the boilers to run during summer months along with a cooling tower, was replaced with a modern Trane air-cooled chiller. In addition, a roof replacement project included extra insulation and white gravel for reflection.
Continuing efforts include replacing air handler motors with premium, efficient models, as well as cog belts and all accessories. The energy management team also conducts routine system tune ups to maintain efficiencies.
