Built in 1977, North Drive Elementary School serves approximately 480 Kindergarten through 4th grade students annually. An additional building was added to the school in 2002. In 2003, Wayne County Public Schools entered into a strategic partnership with Energy Education Inc., an energy conservation consulting firm, to implement energy saving measures. An energy manager was hired to head the school's energy conservation efforts.
Through building audits, the team identified several energy saving measures.
In 2004, the school upgraded its perimeter lighting and replaced its domestic water heater units with more efficient units. These equipment upgrades were overseen by the school's Maintenance Department. In 2005, the lighting throughout the school was upgraded to T-8 fixtures, and its plumbing valves were replaced to reduce the amount of water used per flush. In 2009, HVAC digital controls with offsite monitoring capabilities for the school were also installed.
These equipment upgrades were made available through a performance contract that was overseen by the Maintenance Department and Trane Corporation. Through routine preventative maintenance, the Maintenance Department has been able to ensure that all air filters are changed on a regular basis and that all lighting and time clocks are working properly, increasing the building's energy savings.
Not only has North Drive Elementary School increased its energy efficiency through physical building upgrades, it has also addressed the potential savings that can be met through behavioral changes. The team has educated its staff on more energy-efficient ways they can operate their classrooms while maintaining the comfort and learning experience of their students.
By both improving equipment efficiency and involving the building occupants in energy saving efforts, North Drive Elementary School earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.
