building

Friendly Hills Middle School is an eight year old, 137,000 square foot building participating in the SEE (Schools for Energy Efficiency) Program. Due to the relative newness of this building and the efficiency capabilities of its existing equipment, reduction of energy usage was achieved almost exclusively by adopting conservation behavior. All communication and implementation was guided by the SEE Energy Efficiency Manager for the district. Results include an overall energy use reduction of 11%, an 8% reduction in demand and an average kBTU per square foot of 50.

Although the entire building was already equipped with sensored flourescent lighting, students and staff were encouraged to bypass automation when a more efficient option was available.  Simple tasks such as turning off lights and computer monitors were integral to the success of this program. The kitchen personnel and  building engineers were also trained to reanalyze their use of energy in the building.  Efforts were made to utilize all energy saving strategies such as zone heating and cooling during partially occupied hours and limiting overall equipment usage to tighter schedules.

Communications:

Behavior modification guidelines were conveyed to staff and students via district e-mail, quarterly newsletters and visits by the district Energy Efficiency Manager.  Press releases, school newsletters, Web sites, banners and school events were all used to inform parents and local residents. The local media covered the ENERGY STAR rating achievement numerous times.

Testimonial:

"The community of staff and students at Friendly Hills Middle School took an already efficient building and made it even better by implementing simple conservation tactics outlined by the SEE (Schools for Energy Efficiency) Program. Saving dollars by saving energy should be a strategy that all school districts employ."
