Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, a 40-story two-towered resort in scenic Oahu, Hawaii, has a floorspace of 1,102,174 square feet and includes a three-level open air atrium, 1,229 guestrooms, 60 retail shops, a 10,000-square-foot spa, three restaurants, a parking garage, and 19,500 square feet of function space.  By focusing on making several energy conservation modifications, the building, owned by W2007 WKH TRS, Inc., has earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance 2 years in a row and successfully changed its baseline energy performance score from 75 in the first year to the current 80.

With a concern for the environment and a desire to reduce costs, the owners and staff at Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa set out in 2007 with a plan to lower the hotel's greenhouse emissions. With the installation of approximately 6,000 LED bulbs and fixtures throughout the hotel, timers on guest floors for housekeeper closets, and the re-lamping of every guestroom to 27-watt twist compact lamps, the resort reduced electricity usage by 1,428,325 KW. In just 2 years, the hotel prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to the electricity use from 91.5 households for a year.

With the installation of 1,230 one gallon per minute (GPM) aerators in all guestrooms, water was reduced by 4,578,000 gallons. Gas was reduced by 25,826 Therms with the installation of a new central plant including two 775 Ton chillers, new cooling towers, and all new equipment with high efficiency motors.

A full recycling program has also been introduced, and after 2 years, employees now recycle cardboard, newspaper, office paper, magazines, mixed paper glass, plastic aluminum tin, construction waste, and universal e-waste.  In the past year, billable waste was reduced by over 1,342 tons, and 261 tons of cardboard, 114 tons of glass, 238 tons of food waste, and over 8,646 gallons of cooking oil have been recycled.

Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa has also raised employee and public awareness through partnerships, regularly scheduled volunteer beach cleanups, and ongoing outreach. Nearly 20 staff members also sit on the volunteer based in-house green team committee, which serves as a catalyst for environmental changes.

In 2010, the Green team has been involved in community environmental programs. As an advising committee to the local Community Center, staff members are sharing their successes with others so that they too can make greener choices. The group also donated a day of recycling to a local elementary school to further their environmental program. The team has also successfully championed the use of public transportation by working with the local bus company to save employees money through company passes.

Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach is a recipient of the 2008 Green Business Program Award from the State of Hawaii, and is one of the only hotels in Waikiki named an ENERGY STAR labeled building 2 years in a row.
