Marathon's Garyville, La., refinery is located between New Orleans and Baton Rouge on more than 3,000 acres of land adjacent to U.S. Highway 61 and the Mississippi River. Construction on the refinery began in 1973 by ECOL, Ltd and was completed in 1976 when Marathon purchased and started up the plant. It is the last grassroots refinery built in the United States.

The Garyville refinery is the fourth largest refinery in the U.S. and has a crude oil processing capacity of 490,000 barrels per day and produces gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, jet fuel, asphalt, propylene, butane, isobutane, propane, petroleum coke and sulfur.

In 2002, the Garyville refinery began developing a more comprehensive energy conservation program in conjunction with Marathon's corporate commitment to improve energy efficiency by 10 percent in 10 years. Since receiving the ENERGY STAR plant certification for the first time in 2006, the Garyville refinery has averaged more than 800,000 MMBTU per year in energy savings.  Because Garyville was designed in the early 1970's, its operation is inherently efficient.  Improvements to other control and monitoring systems and attention to operational impacts on energy have allowed Garyville to continue to make incremental improvements in efficiency.
