Honda of America Manufacturing’s auto plant located in East Liberty, OH (ELP) has earned its eighth consecutive ENERGY STAR certification in 2013.
Established in 1989, ELP is a 2.1-million square-foot facility that is home to 2,400 associates. More than 4.5 million vehicles have been built in this facility including the segment-leading Honda CR-V compact sport-utility vehicle (SUV), the Honda Crosstour crossover utility vehicle, and the Acura RDX luxury SUV.
ELP benefits from the real-time monitoring system in place that allows associates to identify areas where energy use can be eliminated during non-use periods. In 2013, ELP created a new on-site consolidation center for the efficient distribution of parts throughout the plant. The consolidation center saved the use of 483,000 gallons of fuel from delivery trucks and eliminated 4.915 metric tons of CO2.
Additionally, by introducing a new process to recycle instrument panels at the facility, ELP was able to eliminate the transport of 39 trailer loads of material to an off-site recycling facility in 2013. The process involves regrinding instrument panels into material that is able to be used to create new panels on site.
