The Mojave Cement Plant was built in 1955, and with continuing expansion had 5 operating kilns in 1957. The plant initiated a modernization project in 1978, and a kiln and preheater tower were constructed in 1981. Most recently the Mojave plant installed a high efficiency vertical finish cement mill, and in 2008 a 24MW behind the meter wind turine project went on line.

In 2003, CalPortland Company worked with ENERGY STAR to create an energy management program based on their Guidelines for Energy Mangagement.  Since that time, the Mojave plant has performed many plant efficiency assesments to identify potential energy savings projects, and with the assistance of Southern California Edison applied and received rebates for installing these energy efficiency projects. These projects include plant compressed air modifications, control's automation projects, process system upgrades,  and a recent energy management control scheme using  the plants control system to create target energy setpoints for the operators.

The Mojave Cement Plant has earned the ENERGY STAR label in 2006 and 2007.  Since then, the plant has a combined savings of 275,486,107 kBtu.
