Standard Oil Trust began building the refinery in 1907. After nearly a year and a half of construction, the first oil was processed on January 2, 1909. Bayway has operated continuously since that day more than a century ago.
In the course of its existence, Bayway has been the home to countless innovations including the birth of commercial petrochemical industry in 1919 with isobutyl alcohol and butyl rubber in the 1930’s.
Bayway Refinery earned its first ENERGY STAR plant certification in 2012 after completing two critical projects - the Vacuum Crude Unit furnace replacement project and replacement of its Sulfur Processing facilities. These projects allowed Bayway to achieve a four digit reduction in the Energy Intensity Index (EII®) rating.
