The Othello factory was originally built in the 1950's, and manufactured ice for transporting produce by train to the East coast.  The factory was expanded and began processing potato products in the Fall of 1964 on a single line.  The factory remained under the ownership of various partners and cooperatives until 1974 when it was purchased by Carnation.  It was later purchased by Nestle in 1985, and then by J.R. Simplot Co. on October 2, 2000.  Today the major products the plant produces are frozen french fry potato products.

J.R. Simplot maintains a comprehensive corporate energy management program.  Under this program, Simplot has progressively applied good energy practices promoted by ENERGY STAR including goal setting, energy benchmarking, and tracking.   Recent energy projects which have been completed include condensing economizer on the boiler stacks, compressed air system upgrade and controls, heat recovery systems in the process area, metering and monitoring for multiple service entrances as well as dedicated uses, and training and education for employees.

J.R. Simplot Othello Plant was first awarded the ENERGY STAR for plants in 2009.
