The primary mission of the 27th Special Operations Wing is to plan and execute specialized and contingency operations using advanced aircraft, tactics, and air refueling techniques to infiltrate, exfiltrate, and resupply special operations forces and provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and close air support in support of SOF operations. General Information Cannon Air Force Base, home of the 27th Special Operations Wing, lies in the high plains of eastern New Mexico, near the Texas Panhandle. The base is eight miles west of Clovis, New Mexico, and is 4,295 feet above sea level. The base itself sits on 3,789 acres of land, and the Melrose Range training area is 60, 010 acres. Operations on Melrose Range also cover an area of 2,500 square miles of airspace. Work Force Currently, about 2,500 active-duty members and civilians make up the work force Cannon Air Force Base, with approximately 2,000 Airmen and 500 civilian employees.
