ENERGY STAR Challenge Participant Story

West Irondequoit Central School District
Rochester, New York
Date Joined: July 17, 2009

The West Irondequoit Central School District is a K-12 public school district that serves 3,840 students and 23,000 district residents with a total staff of 670. Located within the Town of Irondequoit, between the City of Rochester and Lake Ontario, in western New York State, we are proud to have a comprehensive high school that ranks within the top 2% of the Newsweek's ranking of 27,000 American high schools.

Cherishing this opportunity to model behaviors we seek to foster in others, we use energy efficiency as a practical application of science, cooperative effort, moral behavior and fiscal responsibility. We have an active web page
www.westirondequoit.org , community newsletters (The Quote) and each of our 10 schools has a newsletter.  News of our district is regularly published in the local newspaper the Irondequoit Post as well as in the regional newspaper the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle . In addition, we operate ICAT Cable 15 with the East Irondequoit Central School District and our own radio station WIRQ (104.7 FM).  We will use these outlets to promote an Excel Building Project which be voted upon in October of 2009.  Our success in being an ENERGY STAR partner and earning the ENERGY STAR for five of our schools will help us gain support for achieving this award for our other four schools and for alternative energy projects which will use wind and solar.

We share our district's overall energy performance with the community and our schools by using the data from the monthly utility bill logs. Using the demand logs, we identify opportunities to curtail demand and we have joined Energy Curtailment Specialist, Inc. to participate in NYISO's PowerPay! Program.   We participate in Energy Smart training opportunities through the SFMI such as the recent Boiler Optimization seminar.  It is our belief that the ENERGY STAR awards support our efforts and promote new projects as sound, fiscally responsible strategies with great educational opportunities.
