ENERGY STAR Challenge Participant Story

ALFA is the largest national association exclusively dedicated to professionally operated assisted living communities for seniors. Our members have many opportunities to promote energy efficiency, since senior housing communities provide a home and multiple support services to the residents they provide for. Our members vary from small family operated senior residences to companies that own hundreds of senior living communities. The average resident of these communities is an 87 year old female widow who requires assistance with two or more activities of daily living.   We hope to encourage our members to care for seniors in the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient way possible.

ALFA has already been actively promoting the ENERGY STAR award. We plan to present the first ENERGY STAR for a senior care space at our conference in April. Our conference will be held in Orlando at the Gaylord Palms, and we will announce a member who has met all the required benchmarks and have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to energy management.

We have promoted the award multiple times in our weekly newsletter, ALFA Update, that goes out to all members and we have posted news stories about the award on our website. ALFA also has a website devoted to explaining the process to our members. After we present the award, we plan to issue a press release and include the event in our newsletter.

We have been sharing the energy guidelines with our members as well as a link to the ENERGY STAR website. We also promote the ENERGY STAR web conferences, both on our website and through our weekly newsletter. We also have a webpage devoted to explaining the process and the importance of receiving an ENERGY STAR.
