Planet upgraded nearly its entire interior and exterior lighting with advanced- technology ballasts and bulbs.
After installing the new lights, Planet Subaru discovered that they had more light than needed so they convened as a team to analyze the facility’s illumination and remove bulbs in areas that did not require bright light (such as hallways). The team removed 22 lamps throughout the dealership.
Planet Subaru installed a central computer to manage all outdoor lighting based on weather, season, sunrise, and sunset.
Planet Subaru began with the premise that many prospective customers would choose a company that shares their green values, over a company that made no effort to minimize its environmental impact. Planet Subaru recognized the opportunity to inspire its team members through friendly competition, and also to attract attention to the long-term commitment they’ve made to improve energy efficiency and sustainability in their community.
To communicate with customers about how Planet Subaru invests the dollars customers spend at the dealership, Planet Subaru devoted a corner of the showroom to tell their story. Banners, framed photographs, and a television kiosk describe energy-efficiency efforts at the dealership. They even made a coffee table out of a real solar panel so customers could see one up close. Planet Subaru also created a sophisticated, interactive Web micro site. The “Green Planet” link showcases the efforts, including an area that teaches customers how much energy the building's solar array is producing in real time.
