Burnsville, Minnesota
Burnsville Eagan Savage Independent School District 191 (ISD 191) educates more than 10,000 K-12 students across 14 schools. ISD 191, which is located 15 miles from both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, is the 12th largest school district in the state of Minnesota. ISD 191 has made a district-wide commitment to reduce its energy costs, allowing it to direct more resources into the classroom. Through its partnerships with the Schools for Energy Efficiency® (SEE) program and ENERGY STAR, the district has saved more than $782,000 in less than four years by implementing low- and no-cost strategies and a comprehensive program specifically designed for K-12 schools to save energy and money. The district has also reduced its carbon emissions by more than 4,000 tons per year.
In 2006, ISD 191 received ENERGY STAR Leaders recognition for district-wide improvement. Built on the commitment of the superintendent, school board, and an involved staff and student community, the SEE program and the district's partnership with ENERGY STAR helped improve energy efficiency by 13 percent during the 2005-2006 school year. In 2008, ISD 191 was recognized as an ENERGY STAR Top Performer for its portfolio-wide energy performance rating of 78. The district's success in improving energy efficiency is a reflection of the commitment that staff and students have made while making simple changes to their daily habits, such as turning out the lights in classrooms when they are unoccupied. The district also employs power saving measures on all its computer monitors and has retrofitted light fixtures in certain facilities to improve energy efficiency. These energy-saving efforts have helped ISD 191 become not only better stewards of taxpayers' finances but of the environment, too.
