Minneapolis Public Schools and Special District #1, located in Minneapolis, MN, educates more than 32,000 students across a combined floor area of more than 6.1 million square feet. The districts mission is to support students growing into knowledgeable, skilled, and confident citizens capable of succeeding in their work, personal, and family lives well into the 21st century. The district believes environmental sustainability is a commitment everyone must make in order to improve the health of students, maximize the use of resources, and act as a responsible community and global partner.  The district has been an ENERGY STAR Partner since 1995.

Minneapolis Public Schools and Special District #1 has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving energy efficiency by more than 10 percent compared to a 2008 baseline across its portfolio of buildings. The district has improved energy efficiency by reducing bus emissions, using green cleaning products, encouraging biking and walking to school, using eco-friendly lunchroom packaging, and adopting sustainable practices for recycling and disposing large of equipment. Compared to its 2008 baseline, the district currently prevents the emissions of more than 5,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 150,000 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
