Idaho Falls School District 91 employs approximately 1,200 staff members to educate and support more than 10,400 students across more than 1.3 million square feet of floor space. The district's mission, in cooperation with its community, is to develop the whole child in an atmosphere of excellence that is characterized by a comprehensive curriculum, quality instruction, mutual respect, and shared responsibility for learning, thus enabling students to meet or exceed established standards and become life-long learners and self-sufficient citizens. The district views energy efficiency as both an important opportunity to teach students about environmental protection, as well as a way to reduce operating costs. As a result, District 91 strives to improve energy efficiency in order to maximize the funds available for instructional programs and support services, and to educate students and employees about the environmental and financial benefits of energy efficiency. The district has been an ENERGY STAR Partner since 2008.

Idaho Falls School District 91 has been recognized by EPA as ENERGY STAR Leader for improving the energy efficiency of its facilities by more than 40 percent compared to a 2006 baseline and as a Top Performer for achieving an ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 93 across its portfolio of buildings. This improvement represents a savings of approximately $4 million for District 91. Participation in the ENERGY STAR program has provided District 91 with many valuable resources and ideas that have enabled the district to meet its energy goals and ensure that Idaho Falls students are learning to be good stewards of the environment. District 91's success in improving energy efficiency began with a commitment by the Idaho Falls School District 91 Board of Trustees, who partnered with Cenergistic (formerly Energy Education, Inc.) to develop and implement a comprehensive energy efficiency plan. A key element of the plan was appointing an energy manager whose responsibility included educating faculty and staff members on ways to conserve energy, performing energy audits of buildings, compiling and track energy data, identifying energy-saving opportunities, and overseeing improvements. Successful efficiency measures have included focusing on proper maintenance of HVAC systems and equipment; reviewing and modifying indoor and outdoor lighting schedules; reviewing and modifying thermostat set points; upgrading building HVAC control systems; monitoring building occupancy schedules closely; upgrading inefficient lighting; and creating a general awareness of energy efficiency in the district. Compared to its 2006 baseline, the district currently prevents the annual emissions of more than 3,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 76,900 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
