Hamburg Central School District

Hamburg, New York
10% Improvement (2012)
Top Performer (2012)

Hamburg Central School District, located in New York, educates more than 3,000 students with more than 600 staff members across approximately 743,000 square feet of floor space. The district's motto is "pursuing excellence through partnership" and extends to all aspects of school and community collaboration. It is the district's goal to provide a supportive, caring, and productive environment in which the young people of Hamburg can obtain the knowledge, technological abilities, and other skills that they will need to become productive members of the community. Hamburg Central School District provides a strong instructional program in all levels, from pre-kindergarten through the twelfth grade. In addition to an emphasis on academics, the district's program is balanced and enhanced with instruction in art, music, library media skills, technology, and physical education. Hamburg Central School District views energy efficiency as both an important opportunity to teach students about environmental protection and an effective way to reduce operating costs. As a result, the district strives to conserve energy in order to maximize the funds available for instructional programs and support services, and to educate every student and employee about the environmental benefits of energy efficiency. Hamburg Central School District has been an ENERGY STAR Partner since 2011, and its participation in ENERGY STAR has equipped the district with many valuable resources and ideas that have enabled it to meet its energy goals and to ensure that Hamburg students are learning to be good stewards of the environment.

The Hamburg Central School District has been recognized by EPA has an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving energy efficiency by more than 10 percent across its portfolio of buildings compared to its 2011 baseline year. The district has also been recognized as a Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 93 across its portfolio of buildings. This improvement represents a savings of approximately $85,000 for the district in just the first year of its energy management program. The district's success in improving energy efficiency began with a commitment by the Superintendent and Board of Education, who appointed a district-wide energy manager to develop and implement a comprehensive energy management plan. A key element of the plan is that Hamburg Schools has partnered with Cenergistic, Inc. to conserve energy. The district uses Portfolio Manager, EPA's ENERGY STAR measurement and tracking tool, and Energy CAP software to compile and track energy data. The energy manager works with representatives from Cenergistic, Inc. to identify energy savings opportunities and oversee improvements. Successful efficiency measures have included: focusing on energy systems and equipment maintenance; upgrading heating systems to more energy-efficient boilers, upgrading lighting systems; reviewing and modifying both indoor and outdoor lighting schedules and thermostat set points; and purchasing ENERGY STAR qualified office equipment and appliances whenever possible. As a result of these improvements, compared to a 2011 baseline, the district is preventing the emissions of more than 500 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is equal to the emissions sequestered by more than 12,800 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
