Township High School District 211, located approximately 25 miles northwest of Chicago, Illinois, encompasses more than 2.2 million square feet of space and serves more than 12,500 students and 1,900 employees. The district's administrators are committed to serving the educational needs of the community; its mission is to develop and implement quality programs that challenge students to achieve their potential and to become contributing, informed citizens capable of meeting the demands of a changing world. Several years ago, the district formed a partnership with Energy Education, Inc. to improve gas, electric, and water efficiency. The district's administration and Board of Education established preliminary guidelines, which have served as a basis for focusing redirected funds toward the classroom. An ENERGY STAR Partner since 2011, the district has implemented the use of ENERGY STAR tools and resources to continue moving forward with its conservation efforts.

 

Township High School District 211 has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving energy efficiency by more than 30 percent compared to its 2004 baseline, and as a Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 76 across its portfolio of buildings. As of 2012, two of the district's schools have earned the ENERGY STAR for the second year in a row. Since its 2004 baseline, the district has saved more than $8 million in utility costs. The means to achieve such savings have included semi-monthly meetings with key personnel at each school and monthly meetings at a central location encompassing all key players, with a focus on analyzing results and identifying further opportunities for savings. The district has also taken steps toward retrofitting and replacing inefficient equipment, modifying temperature set points, maximizing efficiencies in energy management systems, and emphasizing student and staff member involvement in the conservation effort. Compared to its baseline year of 2004, the district currently prevents the emissions of more than 5,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 146,700 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
