Redlands, California
Top Performer (2012)
20% Improvement (2012)

Redlands Unified School District, located in southern California, educates approximately 22,000 students in facilities encompassing more than 1.7 million square feet of space. The district is committed to preparing students to become productive participants in a diverse, multi-cultural, democratic society through quality education, high expectations, flexible programs, and innovative partnerships. In June 2009, the district retained Energy Education, Inc. and began implementing a people-driven energy management process. The successful partnership has led to increased energy efficiency and has instilled a sustainable energy ethic throughout the district. The district partnered with the ENERGY STAR program in 2010.

Redlands Unified School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving the energy efficiency of its facilities by more than 20 percent since its 2009 baseline and as a Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 99 across its portfolio of buildings. The districts success began with a commitment by the Board of Education and the designation of a district-wide energy manager to implement a comprehensive energy management program. Staff members, faculty, and students within Redlands Unified School District have implemented hundreds of improvements in energy consumption habits. Since 2009, the district has realized more than $1 million in avoided energy costs. Compared to its baseline year, the district currently prevents the emissions of more than 1,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 39,200 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
