Fountain Valley School District (FVSD), located in Orange County, southern California, educates more than 6,000 students in facilities encompassing more than 578,700 square feet of space. Founded in the late 1800s, FVSD is known as the "lighthouse district" because of its commitment to academic excellence. Long considered one of the city's greatest assets, the district's mission is to promote a foundation for academic excellence, mastery of basic skills and responsible citizenship, as well as a desire for students to achieve their highest potential through a partnership of home and community. In 2008, FVSD teamed up with Energy Education, Inc. to implement an energy efficiency program throughout the district. FVSD has been an ENERGY STAR Partner since 2012.
Fountain Valley School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving energy efficiency by more than 20 percent compared to a 2008 baseline and as a Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 97 across its portfolio of buildings. Through education and behavioral changes, the staff members of Fountain Valley School District have increased energy efficiency, made a positive impact on the environment, and saved valuable education dollars for use in important instructional programs and services. Since its baseline year, the district has saved over $726,100 in avoided utility costs and currently prevents the emissions of 300 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 7,690 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
