20% Improvement (2012)

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools (PCCS), located in southeastern Michigan, educates approximately 18,000 students in buildings encompassing more than 2.4 million square feet of floor space. The district aims to provide a safe, supportive, caring, and productive learning environment in which young people can obtain the knowledge, technological abilities, and skills needed to become productive members of society. PCCS administrators view energy efficiency as an opportunity to help protect the environment and reduce operating costs, and strive to optimize energy efficiency, thereby maximizing funds available for instructional programs. PCCS has been an ENERGY STAR Partner since 2010.

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving energy efficiency by more than 20 percent compared to a 2009 baseline. Working alongside Energy Education Inc., the district has closely tracked energy use and identified further savings opportunities. Successful efficiency measures have included intensive audits of occupied and unoccupied facilities, an increased focus on HVAC equipment controls, and continuous analysis of all significant uses of energy. Since its baseline year, the district has saved approximately $2.2 million and prevented the emissions of more than 7,300 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 189,100 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
