San Gabriel, CaliforniaSan Gabriel Unified School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for increasing energy efficiency by more than 10 percent compared to a 2007 baseline and as a Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 93. In June 2007, the district entered into an agreement with Energy Education to reduce expenditures on energy, save taxpayer dollars, and increase energy awareness. The district hired an energy manager and implemented a comprehensive policy of energy conservation. As of July 2011, all of the districts buildings were awarded the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance. Efficiency measures have included regular building energy audits, maintaining a utility database using state-of-the-art software, regular communication with energy vendors, and utilizing opportunities for energy saving retrofits and upgrades.
Since implementing its energy policy, San Gabriel Unified School District has saved more than $1,500,000 in energy costs, as well as more than 340 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 8,800 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
