Canon City Schools is a K-12 school district located in south-central Colorado in a picturesque setting along the Arkansas River. The district educates 3,500 students in buildings encompassing 650,000 square feet of space. The mission of the district is to provide learning for life by cultivating a safe, comfortable environment that will promote the creation of compassionate, responsible, independent, productive citizens through quality education. Canon City Schools administrators believe that the districts energy conservation program helps model its stated mission.

Canon City Schools has been involved in energy conservation projects for many years, with projects including extensive preventative maintenance, use of geothermal energy for heating and cooling, thermal storage, a lighting retrofit, and newly installed insulation to improve building envelopes. This long-standing commitment to energy conservation has increased since becoming an ENERGY STAR Partner in 2008.

Canon City Schools has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving its overall energy performance by 30 percent since its 2007 baseline year. The district has also been recognized as a Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 94 across its portfolio of buildings. As of fiscal year 2011, the district has reduced its energy consumption by more than 30 percent, representing $210,000 in savings per year since 2007. Nine of the districts buildings earned the ENERGY STAR in 2010. Canon City Schools has prevented the emissions of over 1,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 36,600 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years. Becoming an ENERGY STAR Partner has provided the district with a way to be actively engaged in benchmarking, tracking energy consumption, and understanding how each building uses energy. This partnership has helped to implement the districts energy conservation program in a way that engages the districts resources and key stakeholders.
