20% Improvement (2011)

Located at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers, Lewiston School District is one of the largest districts in Idaho, educating more than 4,500 students and encompassing over 609,000 square feet of floor space. The mission of the Lewiston School District is to provide a safe educational environment which enables students to develop and apply the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and values needed to realize their maximum potential. As part of this mission, the District's administrators recognize energy efficiency as a positive, effective way to help the environment while reducing operating costs. In 2008, Lewiston School District entered into a partnership with Energy Education, Inc. and hired an energy manager to implement a comprehensive energy program. The District has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 2009.

Lewiston School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving its district-wide energy efficiency by more than 20 percent compared to a 2008 baseline. Since its baseline period, the District has saved $375,000 in utility costs. One key element of the schools' success has been behavioral changes, such as turning off equipment, lights, and computers when not in use. A combination of staff training and building auditing has helped promote energy efficiency and teach everyone involved to make good everyday energy decisions to help lessen the District's impact on the environment. Using EPA's ENERGY STAR measurement and tracking tool, Portfolio Manager, Lewiston School District has achieved an average energy performance score of 93. The District has avoided the emissions of over 700 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by more than 18,100 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years.
