Chardon Local School District, located in Chardon, Ohio, educates more than 3,000 students and encompasses nearly 340,000 square feet. The districts mission is to provide its students with exceptional educational opportunities. In 2008, Chardon Local School District, with the help of Energy Education, began implementing the companys people-driven energy management process. The district became an ENERGY STAR partner in 2009. The efforts made by district administrators, staff members, and students have led to significantly reduced energy consumption and, most importantly, have instilled a sustainable energy ethic throughout the schools.

 

Chardon Local School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving its district-wide energy efficiency by more than 20 percent compared to a 2007 baseline. Staff members, faculty, and students have implemented hundreds of improvements in energy consumption habits. Their energy conservation efforts have been led by an energy education specialist with ongoing on-site training and oversight. Since its 2007 baseline, the district has prevented the emission of more than 670 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 17,200 tree seedlings grown for 10 years. District officials have realized more than $420,000 in energy savings, avoiding over 20 percent of expected energy costs.
