The district has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 1995 and is committed to being a good steward of taxpayer dollars and redirecting as much funding as possible toward educating its students. A successful partnership with Energy Education, Inc. has led to a significant increase in energy efficiency and has instilled a sustainable energy ethic throughout each of Riverside Unified School District's schools.
Riverside Unified School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Top Performer for achieving a portfolio-wide average ENERGY STAR score of 84 in EPA's ENERGY STAR measurement and tracking tool, Portfolio Manager. As of January 2011, 45 of the district's buildings earned a score of 75 or higher. The district has avoided over 760 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of more than 19,500 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years! Staff, faculty, and students at Riverside Unified School District have implemented many changes and improvements in energy consumption habits. These include establishing a rigorous energy management program in every facility, upgrading underperforming HVAC equipment, and changing behaviors such as turning off lights and computers when not in use.
