Top Performer (2011)

The Downey Unified School District (DUSD) is located approximately 13 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. The district's current enrollment is 22,775 divided among 13 elementary, four middle, and three high schools. DUSD's mission is to provide the highest quality education in a safe, trusting environment; to utilize the resources of the home, school, and community; and to maximize the achievement of all students. The district provides a comprehensive curriculum, based on rigorous academic standards, that is responsive to the strengths and needs of our students. DUSD is committed to developing compassionate, responsible citizens who will be confident, creative, and productive members of a global society.

EPA has recognized DUSD as an ENERGY STAR Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 99 across its portfolio of buildings. In 2010 alone, the district avoided more than 500 metric tons of carbon emissions. This is equivalent to planting more than 100 acres of pine forests or the annual emissions from 100 vehicles. In 2001 the district, with the support of the Board of Education, entered into an agreement with Energy Education Inc. to implement a people-based energy management program that would reduce its utility costs and still provide a positive learning environment for its students. The dollars the district has avoided spending on energy have been redirected to the classrooms. With the on-going support of the staff, students, and Board of Education, DUSD expects to continue being good stewards of its finances and the environment.
