Tooele County School District views energy efficiency and management as both an important opportunity to teach students about their stewardship of the environment and energy resources, as well as a way to reduce utility operating costs and usage. As a result, the district strives to conserve energy to increase the potential of available funds for instructional programs. As part of its commitment to improving energy efficiency, the district is working with Energy Education Inc. on a program that helps promote behavior change around energy avoidance and awareness, as well as educate every student and employee about the benefits of energy efficiency. An ENERGY STAR partner since 2009, Tooele County School District uses ENERGY STAR tools and resources to meet its energy goals and to ensure that its students are learning to be good stewards of their present and future environment.

EPA has recognized Tooele County School District as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving the energy efficiency of its buildings by more than 10 percent since 2007 and as a Top Performer for achieving an average ENERGY STAR score of 84 across its 25-school portfolio. This improvement represents a cost avoidance of approximately $45,000 per month for the district and prevents the emission of more than 7,400 metric tons of greenhouse gases, equivalent to the emissions from more than 1,400 cars or planting almost 1,600 acres of trees. The district's success in improving energy efficiency began with a commitment by the Superintendent and Board of Education, who then appointed an energy education specialist and a technical energy manager to develop and implement a comprehensive energy management plan. A key element of the plan is a partnership with Energy Education Inc., who helps the district use its energy data to identify energy savings opportunities and any potential billing errors from its utility providers. Successful efficiency measures have included:

" Modifying staff and student behavior in shutting down equipment and lights
" Adopting a district energy policy
" Basing the HVAC schedule of operations on contract hours
" Increasing awareness of maintenance and operation of energy management systems
" Upgrading lighting systems
" Reviewing and modifying both indoor and outdoor lighting schedules
" Implementing 74F cooling and 71F heating thermostat set points district wide
