Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District in New York educates 1,200 students in four school buildings representing approximately 280,000 square feet of floor space. The district operates on a 10-month teaching schedule, and has as its main goal to provide a supportive, caring, and productive environment in which the young people of Highland Falls and West Point can obtain the knowledge, technological abilities, and other skills that they will need to become productive members of the community. Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District views energy efficiency as both an important opportunity to teach students about environmental protection, as well as a way to reduce operating costs. As a result, the district strives to conserve energy to maximize the funds available for instructional programs and support services, and to educate every student and employee about the environmental benefits of energy efficiency. Highland Falls and West Point students are learning to be good stewards of the environment.
Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District has been recognized by EPA as ENERGY STAR Leader for improving its energy efficiency by 10 percent over a 2004 baseline. Over the past several years, the district has reduced its overall energy consumption and eliminated emissions of almost 250 metric tons of greenhouse gases, equivalent to the annual emissions from 48 cars or planting more than 50 acres of trees. The district's success in improving energy efficiency began with a commitment by the Superintendent to implement an energy management plan. Successful efficiency measures have included:
· Increasing focus on maintenance of energy systems and equipment
· Installing motion sensors in all school rooms, including administrative offices as well as classrooms
· Upgrading lighting systems
· Reviewing and modifying both indoor and outdoor lighting schedules and thermostat set points
· Purchasing ENERGY STAR qualified office equipment and appliances whenever possible
