Located in Saint Paul, Minnesota's capital city, with more than 41,000 students, Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is Minnesota's second largest school district. Saint Paul Public Schools educates students in 58 school buildings representing approximately 6,600,000 square feet of floor-space.
Since 2004 SPPS has participated in the Schools for Energy EfficiencyTM (SEE) program, which focuses on low and no-cost strategies to reduce overall energy consumption. Through the SEE partnership, SPPS identified and implemented strategies that have created sustainable energy efficiencies district-wide. SPPS has established procedures to ensure consistency of operational characteristics in all schools, while creating a positive learning environment.
As of 2007, SPPS has achieved a reduction in energy use of more than 10 percent compared to a 2003 baseline. This energy use reduction has provided SPPS with total avoided costs exceeding $1,000,000 for the District. Over the past two years, the District has reduced its overall energy consumption by 63,426 MMBtu and eliminated emissions of over 18,726,000 pounds of CO2.
Participation in ENERGY STAR has provided the District with many valuable resources and ideas that have enabled them to meet their energy goals and to ensure that SPPS students are learning to be good stewards of the environment.
Saint Paul's Public Schools has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 2005.
