Yadkin County School District in North Carolina educates 6,000 students in ten school buildings representing approximately one million square feet of floor space. Yadkin County School Districts main objective is to provide a supportive, caring and productive environment in which the children can obtain the knowledge and skills that they will need to become productive members of society. The district believes that it is its duty to our community and environment to do its part to save energy and resources. Increasing energy efficiency helps cut the cost of operating facilities, thus giving more resources to aid in educating students. The district's partnership with ENERGY STAR has provided Yadkin County School District with resources and information needed to compare energy efficiency with other buildings nationwide. Partnering with ENERGY STAR has helped the district to strive to set new goals and keep its facilities operating at full efficiency.

Yadkin County School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leaders Top Performer for achieving a portfolio-wide average energy performance rating of 90 as well as a portfolio-wide increase in energy efficiency of 10 percent in 2009 and 20 percent in 2010. Over the past four years Yadkin County Schools has reduced its electrical usage by 5.2 million kilowatt hours and heating oil usage by 62,000 gallons.  In the last year alone, the district has eliminated carbon emissions of more than 4,000 metric tons, the equivalent of planting more than 900 acres of trees. Yadkin County School District has saved a total of $716,000 in the past four years of its energy management program. The district's success in energy savings started when the Board of Education adopted an energy policy and, with the help of EduCon, implemented the policy and trained an energy manager to oversee the program. The energy management team tracks energy cost and usage, regularly audits all the buildings in the district, and makes improvements when needed to improve buildings' efficiency. With close communication between the administration, faculty, maintenance team, and students, the district has been able to make its energy efficiency program a success. Yadkin County School District has benefited from its relationship with ENERGY STAR.
