South Colonie Central School District has eight schools with a total K-12 enrollment of more than 5,400 students. Because energy is often the largest operating expense for school districts after salaries, South Colonie is committed to becoming as efficient as possible. With the help of the ENERGY STAR program, South Colonie Central School District is closer to that goal than ever before.
South Colonie Central School District has been recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leaders Top Performer in 2008, 2009, and 2010 for achieving an average energy performance rating of 75 or greater across its entire portfolio of buildings. The district has previously earned Leaders recognition for improving its energy performance by 10 percent in 2004 and 20 percent in 2008. The district has evaluated the energy efficiency of all of its school buildings and, through a strong energy management program, improved the overall efficiency of its buildings with substantial savings in energy costs. Since its baseline year of 2001, South Colonie Central School District has avoided more than $3.1 million in energy costs. The district has avoided annual greenhouse gas emissions of more than 1,200 metric tons, the equivalent of planting 275 acres of trees -- every year! With this success in hand, South Colonie plans to pursue more energy efficiency investments and educate staff, students, and the community about the financial and environmental benefits of energy efficiency.
South Colonie joined the ENERGY STAR program in 2004.
