TVs Key Product Criteria

Effective Date: June 1, 2013

On Mode Power Consumption Requirements:

PON_MAX = 100  tanh(0.00085  (A  140) + 0.052) + 14.1

Where:

  • PON_MAX is the maximum allowable On Mode Power consumption in W
  • A is the viewable screen area of the product in sq. inches, calculated by multiplying the viewable image width by the viewable image height
  • tanh is the hyperbolic tangent function

Standby-Passive Mode Power Consumption Criteria:

To qualify as ENERGY STAR under Version 6.0, qualified products must consume no more than one (1.0) watt while in Standby-Passive Mode. Additionally, the lowest consuming Standby-Passive Mode must be the default Standby-Passive Mode for the TV as shipped to consumers.

Luminance:

To qualify as ENERGY STAR under Version 6.0, the peak luminance of the product in the "home" (or default, as-shipped) picture setting, shall greater than or equal to 65% of the peak luminance of the retail (or the brightest-selectable) preset picture setting.

TVs with Automatic Brightness Control (ABC):

To account for the power savings achieved through automatic brightness control, where the feature is activated by default when shipped to the end user and meets the sensor validation test, On Mode power consumption shall be calculated as follows:

PON = (0.55  P300) + (0.45  P0)

Where:

  • PON is the calculated On Mode power with ABC enabled by default,
  • P300 is the measured On Mode power with ABC enabled when tested at 300 lux per Section 5.5 of the Test Method
  • P0 is the measured On Mode power with ABC enabled when tested per Section 5.5 of the Test Method, but with 0 lux entering the sensor.

Sensor Validation Test:
The average power measured at 50 lux (P50) shall increase by at least 5% relative to the average power measured at 10 lux (P10), the average power measured at 100 lux shall increase by at least 5% relative to the average power measured at 50 lux (P50), and the average power measured at 300 lux (P300) shall be greater than or equal to the average power measured at 100 lux (P100), as indicated below:

(P50-P10)/P10 ≥5% , (P100-P50)/P50 ≥ 5%, P300≥P100

Where:

  • Pn is the Power consumed for On Mode with ABC enabled at n lux, with a direct light source

TVs Using an External Power Supply (EPS):

To qualify, the EPS must meet the level V performance requirements under the International Efficiency Marking Protocol and include the level V marking. Additional information on the Marking Protocol is available at www.energystar.gov/powersupplies.
