Professional Displays Key Product Criteria

Professional displays are currently covered under two different ENERGY STAR specifications – TV and Display. Most professional displays are covered under the ENERGY STAR Display specification. However, if the professional display includes a tuner or Download Acquisition Mode (DAM) for hospitality TVs, it is covered by the more stringent ENERGY STAR TV specification, not the Display specification.1

The key product criteria information below is for professional signage covered under the ENERGY STAR Display specification.

On Mode Power Requirements

Table 1: Maximum On Mode Power, PON_MAX
Screen Size Displays with Dp ≤20,000 pixels/in2 Displays with Dp > 20,000 pixels/in2
Computer Monitors, Signage Displays, and Digital Picture Frames
d<12.0 (6.0xr)+(0.05xA)+3.0 (6.0xr1 )+(3.0xr2 )+(0.05xA)+3.0
12.0≤d<17.0 (6.0xr)+(0.01xA)+5.5 (6.0xr1 )+(3.0xr2 )+(0.01xA)+5.5
17.0≤d<23.0 (6.0xr)+(0.025xA)+3.7 (6.0xr1 )+(3.0xr2 )+(0.025xA)+3.7
23.0≤d<25.0 (6.0xr)+(0.06xA)-4.0 (6.0xr1 )+(3.0xr2 )+(0.06xA)-4.0
25.0≤d ≤61.0 (6.0xr)+(0.1xA)-14.5 (6.0xr1 )+(3.0xr2 )+(0.1xA)-14.5
30.0≤d≤61.0 (0.27xA)+8.0 (0.27xA)+8.0

Dp = (r x 106)/A in pixels per square inch
d = diagonal screen size in inches
r = screen resolution in megapixels
A = viewable screen area in inches squared
r1 = (20,000xA)/106 in megapixels
r2 = ((Dp-20,000)xA)/106 in megapixels

There are adjustments to the maximum on-mode power shown in Table 1 for enhanced-performance, automatic brightness control, and a low-voltage DC source. Please go to ENERGY STAR Display specification for more details.

Sleep Mode Power Requirements

Displays must meet the following Sleep Mode power requirements that take into account networking, bridging, and additional capabilities. Measured Sleep Mode power must be less than or equal to the following calculation.

Maximum Sleep Mode Power = 0.5 watts + PDN + PADD,

PDN = the sum of applicable Networking and Bridging Power Allowances in watts
PADD = the sum of applicable Additional Capability Power Allowances in watts

Table 2: Power Allowances for Sleep Mode with Displays
Included Types Power (watts)
Bridging (PDN)
USB 1.x 0.1
USB 2.x 0.5
USB 3.x, DisplayPort (non-video connection), Thunderbolt 0.7
Networking (PDN)
Wi-Fi 2.0
Fast Ethernet 0.2
Gigabit Ethernet 1.0
Additional Capabilities (PADD)
Occupancy Sensor 0.5
Memory: Flash memory-card/smart-card readers, camera interfaces, PictBridge 0.2

Off Mode Power Requirements

Displays need not have an Off Mode for certification. For Displays that do offer an Off Mode, measured Off Mode power shall be less than or equal to 0.5 watts.

1 The ENERGY STAR display specification -- which addresses computer monitors, digital picture frames and professional displays -- limits Off mode, Sleep mode (based on connectivity capabilities) and On Mode power (based on screen size and features). The ENERGY STAR television specification – which addresses hospitality TVs, professional displays with tuners: 1) Limits Standby-Passive mode (less than or equal to 1 watt and On mode (based on screen size) power; 2) Sets luminance and DAM requirements; and 3) Limits total energy use of hospitality TVs.
