Use Energy Design Guidance

EARN THE ENERGY STAR BUILDING LABEL

New buildings created using an integrated design approach with emphasis on energy performance are strong candidates to meet 2030 goals and qualify for the ENERGY STAR label. Architects are encouraged to work with the building owners to measure the building's energy consumption with Portfolio Manager and receive EPA recognition. EPA energy performance rating system provides seamless metrics from design through occupancy and operation. These metrics provide feedback to the design team and building owner on whether the energy goals were met and how to design and operate better performing buildings in the future. Buildings that achieve an EPA rating of 75 or higher in Portfolio Manager are eligible for the ENERGY STAR label.

Action Items

  • Apply for the ENERGY STAR building label. Complete the Application Letter and the Statement of Energy Performance and certify that required indoor environmental criteria are met. Submit both documents to EPA.
  • Promote the fact that the building achieved the desired energy performance goal by displaying the ENERGY STAR plaque on the building and communicating success in promotional materials and case studies.
