Save Up to $50 per Computer Annually

The ENERGY STAR Low Carbon IT Campaign is a nationwide effort to assist and recognize organizations for reducing the energy consumed by their computers and monitors. Saving energy reduces air pollution associated with the burning of fossil fuels, and ultimately lowers the risk of global warming. Read the EPA press release on the Low Carbon IT Campaign launch.

To join the Low Carbon IT Campaign, your organization pledges to activate power management features on your monitors and computers to save energy and reduce your carbon footprint. You can increase energy savings further by purchasing ENERGY STAR qualified computers and monitors. A brief online pledge form asks you for some basic information that will help EPA estimate the energy savings and environmental benefits from these actions.

Many leading organizations have already joined. Read about how Verizon PDF (776KB) is activating power management features on 185,000 PCs to save $7 million net of project costs. Please see the list of original Low Carbon IT Charter participants, who joined during the beginning of the campaign in spring 2008, and other organizations that have joined since.

What is Power Management?

Power management features place monitors and computers (CPU, hard drive, etc.) into a low-power "sleep mode" after a period of inactivity. Touching the mouse or keyboard "wakes" the computer and monitor in seconds. Visit Technical Overview of Power Management for case studies, power management tools, and technical instructions for enterprises and individuals.

Why Join?

  1. Free technical expertise and assistance to help you determine the best way to activate power management features in your IT environment;
  2. An estimate of your organizations’ energy and carbon savings, which you can apply towards your carbon reduction goals.
  3. An official certificate of recognition from EPA acknowledging your efforts on behalf of energy efficiency and the environment.
  4. Possible national recognition from EPA for outstanding Campaign participants via mentions in national news stories, online case studies, and professional journals.
    Example: Hear National Public Radio Discuss the Power Management Opportunity, and GE’s Experience Exit ENERGY STAR
