Utility Highlights: CFS Incentives in New Mexico and Michigan
In each quarterly newsletter, ENERGY STAR will highlight one or two utilities offering or developing new incentives for CFS equipment that earn the ENERGY STAR. For this newsletter, it is New Mexico Gas Corporation (NMGC), servicing Albuquerque and approximately 60 percent of the state, and DTE Energy, servicing Detroit and other parts of Michigan.
NMGC is currently offering incentives for natural gas-fueled ENERGY STAR qualified fryers ($250) but is also filing (at the end of September) to develop four additional incentive programs for ENERGY STAR qualified, gas-fueled CFS equipment: dishwashers ($300), convection ovens ($720), and griddles ($225).
In addition, NMGC is incentivizing high-efficiency pre-rinse spray valves ($10) and boosting the fryer incentive to $500 in 2010. NMGC is currently promoting the fryer program with half page advertisements and 15 second commercials. More information is available at: www.nmgco.com/Gas_Fryer_Rebate.aspx.
DTE Energy offers both prescriptive and custom incentives for businesses and offers the following for ENERGY STAR qualified CFS equipment: refrigerators and freezers (up to $450), steam cookers (up to $900), and hot holding cabinets (up to $600).
DTE also offers incentives for energy-efficient ovens, lighting, and high-efficiency pre-rinse spray valves. More information about DTE Energy's incentive program is available at: www.dteenergy.com/businessCustomers/saveEnergy.

EPA's Focus on High-Efficiency Pre-Rinse Spray Valves
EPA’s WaterSense and ENERGY STAR programs have partnered to develop a specification for high-efficiency pre-rinse spray valves (PRSVs).
As a first step, EPA has issued a notification of intent (NOI) to develop a specification, which outlines EPA's approach to developing the draft specification, the efficiency and performance criteria in development, and the technical issues that still need to be resolved. If you have comments or suggestions about the PRSV specification development process, please e-mail watersense-products@erg.com.
High-efficiency PRSVs help commercial kitchens reduce water and energy use without sacrificing cleaning performance. According to the PG&E Food Service Technology Center (FSTC), installing these devices in a commercial kitchen is one of the easiest and most cost effective energy saving steps available to food service operators.
When using a one-gallon per minute PRSV three hours a day, PG&E FSTC estimates that 180 gallons of water would be saved each day, as well as 180 gallons of waste water and 1.5 therms of natural gas. This equates to an annual cost savings of $900 to $1050!*
For more information about the notification of intent, visit: www.epa.gov/watersense/pp/prsv.htm. For more information about PG&E FSTC, visit: www.fishnick.com.
*Assumptions are based on water cost of $2.00 per unit (748 gallons), sewer cost of 3.00 per unit (748 gallons), and gas cost of $1.00 per therm.

Investing in Green Power with the Green Power Partnership
Periodically, the ENERGY STAR CFS Newsletter will highlight additional EPA programs that can help ENERGY STAR partn ers protect the environment.
The Green Power Partnership (GPP) is a voluntary program that advocates the increased use of green power, or electricity produced from renewable resources and technologies (e.g., solar, wind, geothermal). Investing in green power is a great way for businesses to improve their carbon footprint. For example, according to the GPP, more than 950 partners are purchasing more than 14.3 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually! This equates to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 11.3 million tons; the same as removing almost 1.9 million passenger vehicles from the road!
There are many benefits to joining the GPP and exceptional GPP partners are often showcased on the EPA’s Top Partner List and can even win Green Power Leadership Awards.
The GPP is available to organizations operating within the United States that pledge to meet the minimum renewable energy purchase requirement. Partners that meet all GPP program stipulations are given access to the EPA Green Power Partner mark that may be displayed on your company’s Web site and general marketing materials.
For more information, including steps to become a GPP Partner, please visit: www.epa.gov/grnpower.

Partner Spotlight: Blodgett Oven Company
Blodgett Oven Company, part of the Middleby Corporation, first joined ENERGY STAR as a buildings partner more than ten years ago and became a manufacturing partner in 2003. Today, Blodgett is an active partner in both the ENERGY STAR commercial steamer and commercial oven program areas, and was one of the first companies to qualify their gas and electric convection ovens in May of this year.
Earlier this year, Blodgett launched the XCEL-50EC half size oven exclusively for KFC and ensured that the model was ENERGY STAR qualified. Blodgett worked with KFC for nearly three years to develop this energy-efficient oven and their hard work is paying off. To date, Blodgett has placed more than 5,000 ovens in KFC locations across the Unites States. Each energy-efficient oven is expected to save franchisee owners approximately $600 per year in electricity as compared to the ovens they are replacing, saving KFC approximately $3 million in energy costs annually.

Blodgett President Gary Mick cutting the ribbon on the XCEL-50EC.
“Blodgett is proud that KFC chose our company to launch this new oven promoting energy efficiency at their restaurants”, says Mark Pumphret, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Blodgett, “With more than 15,000 KFC locations across the globe, KFC has already installed this new oven in approximately one-third of all locations.”
Blodgett has shown a long-term commitment to environmental best practices, employing an environmental team dedicated to developing energy- and water-saving technology and receiving the Governor’s Environmental Award in 2007. As for the equipment itself, Blodgett received the title of Overall Best in Convection and Deck Ovens for 2008 by Foodservice Equipment and Supplies magazine as well as 2007 Supplier of the Year Award for Cooking Equipment from the Supply and Equipment Foodservice Alliance (SEFA) buying group.

"Where to Buy" Tool for ENERGY STAR CFS Equipment
EPA recently launched a new section of the ENERGY STAR Web site for CFS equipment, featuring a new “Where to Buy” tool. This tool, which replaced the “Find a Store” link, provides the contact information and Web sites of CFS dealers that joined the ENERGY STAR program and promote ENERGY STAR qualified equipment to their customers.
The partner list is expected to expand quickly and serve as an invaluable resource for equipment buyers looking for energy-efficient CFS equipment. The “Where to Buy” link can be found in the right-hand side of the ENERGY STAR CFS Web site (green button): www.energystar.gov/cfs.

ENERGY STAR Version 2.0 Specification for Commercial Refrigerators and Freezers
Current ENERGY STAR partners for commercial refrigerators and freezers who have not yet partnered under the Version 2.0 specification must submit a two-page ENERGY STAR Commitment Form (available at: www.energystar.gov/join, under manufacturers).
Glass and mixed door models may be qualified under Version 2.0 at this time, while solid door models are still covered under the Version 1.1 specification until the end of this year.
In the coming months, EPA will release a new Version 2.0 qualified product information form for use in submitting performance data for solid door models prior to the Version 2.0 effective date. On January 1, 2010, all solid door models which have not been re-submitted under the new specification will be removed from the Qualified Product List.
