ENERGY STAR Award-winning partner CBRE engaged a research team from Maastricht University to measure the uptake of green building certification in the top 30 largest U.S. office markets from 2005 to 2013. The results are outlined in this 38-page report. Among the key findings are:
- There's been a rapid adoption of green building by commercial real estate in these markets. At the end of 2013, 13.2% of the commercial building stock had been ENERGY STAR certified, LEED certified, or both, compared to 1.5% at the end of 2005.
- Minneapolis and San Francisco lead the way in terms of adoption by square footage. On the flip side, Detroit and Kansas City have the greatest opportunity for growth.
- Green building is the new norm. In many markets, it is now common practice to construct or manage sustainable office buildings.
