2013 Emerging Technology Award

Samsung's DV457 is Leading the Way in Energy-Efficient Clothes Drying

EPA awarded Samsung Electronics' DV457 – A1* clothes dryer the 2013 ENERGY STAR® Emerging Technology Award, a first for clothes dryers. The emerging technology award recognizes products that are at the forefront of energy efficiency and climate protection.

COOL FACTS: EPA estimates that dryers earning the Emerging Technology Award can be more than 32 percent more efficient than standard dryers, saving $460 in electric costs over their service life while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by three tons (CO2).

"Over the past decade, we have seen collective progress with energy efficiency across all appliance categories, except clothes dryers – but now that all changes," said Peter Banwell, ENERGY STAR director of product marketing. "Over a year ago, EPA set a difficult to achieve energy efficiency target, and we are excited that Samsung rose to the challenge and met our high expectations."

The Emerging Technology Award is given annually in select product categories to innovative products that have the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Chosen products must meet rigorous performance requirements. In light of efficiency advances in clothes dryers more generally, they are also currently being considered for the ENERGY STAR label, and EPA is working to develop a specification that would recognize a broader range of high efficiency models starting in 2014.

"Eco-efficient appliances are a must-have, and families want all of their appliances to play a role in reducing their impact on the environment," said Kevin Dexter, senior vice president of home appliances sales and marketing for Samsung Electronics America. "Samsung is honored to be the first home appliance manufacturer to receive this award for a dryer as we continue to push the envelope to deliver more and more energy conscious appliances."

The DV457-A1 dryer will be available in July at select retailers nationwide.

Products, homes and buildings that earn the ENERGY STAR label prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy efficiency requirements set by the U.S. EPA. In 2012 alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $24 billion on their utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to those of 50 million vehicles. From the first ENERGY STAR qualified computer in 1992, the ENERGY STAR label can now be found on products in more than 65 different categories, with more than 4.5 billion sold over the past 20 years. Over 1.4 million new homes and 20,000 facilities, including offices, schools, hospitals, and industrial plants, have earned the ENERGY STAR. For more information, visit www.energystar.gov.
